Festival Background

The Mountain Film Festival is an international film festival held in Hobart, Tasmania as part of the Mountain Festival celebrating the culture and communities associated with mountains. The festival films are selected for their diverse approach to living and interacting with mountains around the world. The festival runs from Thursday 13 March until Sunday 16 March 2008 and includes evening and matinee sessions.

Screenings are presenteds by filmmakers and by representatives from Telluride Mountainfilm, the world's preeminent film festival dedicated to educating and inspiring audiences about issues that matter, cultures worth exploring, environments worth preserving and conversations worth sustaining.

The Mountain Film Festival presents the highest quality international films through an ongoing relationship with Mountainfilm in Telluride, USA. Screenings also include the work of Tasmanian and national filmmakers - and the widely diverse films include comedy, landscapes, cultures, extreme sports, adrenaline and above all the world's best mountain adventures.
New to the 2008 festival is the Summer Safari held in conjunction with Wide Angle Tasmania, provider of professional development activities for emerging filmmakers in Tasmania. Twelve aspiring filmmakers are currently on a safari to produce a series of short documentary stories that the explore the unique, dark and gothic mythology of Tasmania; the interesting characters, eccentric artists, travel and gourmet experiences, architecture, natural heritage and historical aspects, bizarre and mysterious phenomenon associated with Australia's island state.

These films will have their premiere screening at the Mountain Film Festival - and will provide a great local flavour to the festival.

We hope that you can be a part of this exciting and hopefully personally rewarding festival. Just don't leave buying your tickets too late!

MountainFilm

Mountainfilm in Telluride, now 29 years old, was founded by a handful of dirtbag climbers with a desire to capture their passion on film and share it with the community.

Mountainfilm sees mountains as a metaphor for us, representations of wild places and the power of geography to shape our world views. Mountainfilm is a celebration of landscapes, cultures and the honed mastery of adrenaline.

Mountainfilm is far more than a film festival. It highlights the power of film and the arts to change the world and we are absolutely stoked to have the beautiful folks at Mountainfilm on board for the 2008 Mountain Film Festival.
